One thing there is no shortage of on the Internet is different ways to make money and work from home (or lose it if you don’t know what you’re doing). eBooks, or digital information products, represent an extremely interesting income source.
People have been making a killing selling ebooks, are making a killing selling ebooks as we speak and will continue to make a killing.
Most ebooks are utterly useless but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t the occasional exception. One thing is certain though: ebooks can definitely prove to be moneymakers.
The Reasons Why eBooks Are a Good Source Of Income
- Cost of production is low. You can either outsource the creation of your ebook quite reasonably, or, if the niche is something you have good knowledge in, you can do it yourself. This makes the cost of entry barrier almost non-existent.
- Cost of distribution is low. With a digital product, there is virtually no cost for distribution, no shipping issues to deal with almost no infrastructure to build. There are dozens of ways to integrate credit card processing without having to have the complications of your own merchant account, for example.
- Very little overhead. It is not completely non-existent, but there generally will be very little ongoing costs related to your eBook. You may have some minor infrastructure costs like website hosting and sales transaction fees, but they are very, very minimal. The result is a very high net sales profit margin.
So, with all of that going for them, how do you get started becoming your own eBook author or distributor? First off, there are a couple of different approaches you can take.
One of them would involve creating products that you intend to promote via affiliate networks the other would be a more simplistic approach wherein you simply plan to sell the eBooks yourself from your site. It is a good idea to really define your intentions and plan before just diving in. The route you take does affect some key business and strategy decisions.
If you plan on offering an affiliate program (where you pay a percentage of the sale to those affiliate marketers who promote your product), then you would be well served to look at a large system that already has a built-in affiliate support model, such as Clickbank (while it does have a reputation of being “sleazy”, it is probably the best place to sell ebooks at this point).
Tracking and paying individual affiliates can be a daunting task, so it’s well worth it to allow a system to handle this for you in exchange for a small transaction fee. There are other alternatives to Clickbank as well, it is just the largest and most well known place to sell ebooks.
If you intend to promote you own products on your own sites and do not intend on offering affiliate programs, then you don’t have quite as much work to do. Probably one of the easiest ways to integrate billing into your site is through PayPal. PayPal is widely known and respected on the Internet and people will generally feel comfortable using it as a payment method. It is not nearly as flexible as a full shopping cart product, but its ease of use and universal acceptance can’t be beat.
Keys to Creating a Successful eBook
Success will generally be determined by sales, right? So what are the key factors that you need to control in order to see good sales? Here are just a few of them:
- Quality Content. Seems simple, but honestly, many of the eBooks that you get online are not of very high quality and can you really expect someone to not return the product if it’s shabby? This happens many times because the work is outsourced overseas to non-American writers and the quality is sub-par. If there are a lot of grammar and spelling mistakes or if it is just “confusing” and not easy to read, it is not going to do well for you in terms of sales.
- Perceived Value. This is established in the sales page. It is important that you “over deliver” on the value that you are giving to your potential customer. If you are selling the book for $27, make it seem as though it’s worth $47 and they’re getting a deal. You can do this in several ways – more content, better content, additional bonuses, etc…
- Traffic, Traffic, Traffic. Yep, you can’t expect to sell it if nobody see’s it! So, you need to get a lot of eyes on your sales page in one way or another. Either SEO (search engine optimization), PPC (pay per click), list promotions, or whatever other method you intend on using.
Marketing with eBooks can be a great way of generating additional income streams. Once a site is built and the product delivered, if you promote and market it correctly, you can have an income stream for a long time to come.
Just make sure to keep it simple in the beginning and concentrate on getting a product in the marketplace, you can always refine the process as you go. And always remember to over-deliver on the content and the quality – that will build trust in your readers and give them a reason to come back for more in the future.
